Od roku 1975 člen United States National Academy of Sciences a American Academy of Arts and Sciences.[1][2] V roku 1990 sa stal členom National Academy of Engineering.[3]
V roku 1978 dostal spolu s Robertom Woodrowom Wilsonom obdržal Nobelovu cenu za fyziku za objav reliktového žiarenia. V tom roku dostal Nobelovu cenu aj Piotr Leonidovič Kapica, ktorého práca s týmto objavom nesúvisela.
