George Stigler

George Joseph Stigler ( * 17. január 1911 Seattle, Washington, USA - † 1. december 1991, Chicago, Illinois) bol americký ekonóm.

Študoval na University of Washington, ktorú ukončil v roku 1931 s titulom B.A. Nasledujúci rok začal študovať na Northwestern University. V roku 1932 získal titul M.B.A. Doktorandské štúdium ekonómie absolvoval na University of Chicago, kde získal štipendium. Štúdium na tejto univerzite začal v roku 1933 a titul Ph.D. dostal v roku 1938.

Ako učiteľ začal pracovať v roku 1936 na Iowa State College, kde učil do roku 1938. Neskôr pracoval na Columbia Univesity (19471958) a na University of Chicago (1958 - 1991) Od začiatku 50. rokov do konca 60. rokov 20. storočia sa v rámci svojej vedeckej činnosti zaoberal priemyselnou organizáciou.

George J. Stigler dostal Nobelovu cenu za ekonómiu v roku 1982. Bol kľúčovým predstaviteľom Chicagskej školy ekonómie ako aj zakladateľom spoločnosti Mont Pelerin Society (od roku 1976 do roku 1978). V roku 1987 získal Národné vedecké vyznamenanie (National Medal of Science).
