Venuje sa najmä divadelnému muzikálu, často vystupoval na Broadwayi. K jeho najslávnejším divadelným predstaveniam patrí Fantóm opery (1986-1991) pod vedením Andrewa Lloyda Webbera, za rolu Fantóma získal prestížne ceny Tony Award i Laurence Olivier Award. V televízii ho preslávil sitkom BBC Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. K najznámejším filmom patrí Barnum, alebo Condorman.

V roku 2002 sa umiestnil na 17. mieste v ankete o najväčšieho Brita všetkých čias.[2]
