Pred play-off vypukol škandál z dôvodu, že Minnesota North Stars vypustila niekoľko posledných zápasov základnej časti, aby sa v play-off vyhla celku Chicago Blackhawks. Po sezóne tak bol mierne zmenený systém play-off, už sa ďalej nepoužíval systém tím1 vs. tím3 a tím2 vs. tím4, ale tím1 vs. tím4 a tím2 vs. tím3.
