Je členom skupiny The Cure. Známy je taktiež vďaka spolupráci s Davidom Bowiem v rokoch 1987 až 1999. Rovnako bol členom kapely The Machine. Žil v Bostone, posledné roky býva v Nashville.

Ako gitarista je uznávaný najmä pre svoju zručnosť a všestrannosť. Je považovaný za jedného z najodvážnejších gitarových improvizátorov od čias Jimiho Hendrixa.
