Vypracovala sa z vokalistky lokálnej rozhlasovej stanice k big bandu Bennyho Goodmana. Neskôr sa stala mnohostrannou umelkyňou. Skladala hudbu pre filmy, stala sa filmovou herečkou a nahrávala konceptuálne albumy zahŕňajúce poéziu, komorný pop a artové piesne.
Zomrela v 81 rokoch na komplikácie spôsobené diabetom.
