James Braid

James Braid (19. června 1795 – 25. března 1860) byl skotský chirurg, významný průkopník na poli hypnózy, hypnoterapie[1] a vlivná osobnost v oblasti hypnotické, ale i chemické anestezie[2]. Je považován za „otce moderního hypnotismu“ [3].

Braid byl třetím synem a sedmým a nejmladším dítětem Jamese Braida (c.1761-184?) a Anne Suttie (c.1761-?). Narodil se dne 19. června 1795 v Ryelaw House, ve farnosti Portmoak, Kinross, Skotsko.[4]

17. listopadu 1813 ve věku 18 let se Braid oženil s 21 letou Margaret Masonovou (1792-1869), dcerou Roberta Masona (? -1813) a Helen Masonové, rozené Smithové. Měli dvě děti Anne Daniel, rozená Braid (1820-1881) a James Braid (1822-1882), z nichž obě se narodily v Leadhills v Lanarkshire.

As a consequence of the straightening and the re-routing of the course of the River Leven, Fife between 1826 and 1836 – the River Leven having been, for many years, the designated boundary between Kinross and Fife – the area known as "The Ryelaw" was officially transferred from the Parish of Portmoak, in the county of Kinross (into which Braid had been born), to the Parish of Kinglassie, in the county of Fife on 15 May 1891 (41 years after his death).
